Situated near the green fringe of Vredendal, close to the Olifants River valley in the Western Cape, the 10.5MW Vredendal Solar feeds enough clean energy into the country’s grid to power 9 200 homes each year.

This solar PV plant is equally serious about about helping to positively touch the lives of communities in Vredendal, Klawer, Lutzville and the small fishing village of Dooringbaai, all of which lie within a 50km radius of the plant.

ABOUT US

Constructed in 2013 on 65 hectares of agricultural land, Vredendal Solar commenced commercial operations the following year as part of the second round of the country’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP).

The project lies within the Matzikama Local Municipality, some 300kms north of Cape Town, and feeds power into the nearby Bulte Substation. Comprising 35000 x 300kW Renesola modules, manufactured by Solaire Direct Technologies in Cape Town, this is a truly South African project.

Vredendal Solar Power Park (RF) (Pty) Ltd is owned by Old Mutual, various funds managed by African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM), Vredendal J&J HoldCo, Engie Solar Africa and Vredendal Solar Community Trust. Solaire Contracting (Pty) Ltd is the Operation & Maintenance service provider.

Funding from Vredendal Solar is used to implement a number of local socio-economic development initiatives including the provision of a community social worker, running workshops for the disabled and unemployed youth and funding for a teaching assistant in a local school.

COMMUNITY

Vredendal Solar supports and funds a number of socio-economic development projects to benefit its local communities. Added to this, the solar project will be supporting its first enterprise development programme in 2023, aimed at boosting local SMME’s and entrepreneurs’ access to the economy, thereby stimulating skills and jobs.

Supporting early childhood development centres, an aftercare teacher at a local school, sports development and a number of other social welfare and CSI initiatives, via the Vredendal Solar Community Trust, helps to improve the lives of hundreds of community members.
